BOSTON ART MUSEUM

The new Boston ART Museum, located waterfront on the Boston Harbor in Jeffrie’s Point, combines contemporary, biomorphic, and artistic architectural design to acknowledge and re-excite the community of East Boston, MA. The Boston ART Museum incorporates several architectural languages drawn from its surrounding context. A massive, rectilinear form constructed of site-cast, wood-stamped concrete was designed to mimic the modern residencies surrounding the area. To the East, this mass is interrupted by a plethora of diverse free-form geometries. The organic nature of Pier’s Park Sailing Center, an indoor-outdoor community space and park influenced the biomorpic incorporation into the museum’s design. Large, geodesic forms made of Ethylene tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE) paneling shape the museum’s interior and exterior spaces. The material experiments with differentiating opacities cater to each interior space. The articulation of the two languages continue into the museum’s interior, creating irregularly-shaped galleries and residual spaces flooded with natural light. By integrating architecture, art, nature, and human experience, the Boston ART Museum strives to serve, celebrate, and strengthen the communities of Jeffrie’s Point and East Boston.
